The Tofu Treatment

vegan_circleWhen I first started trying to be vegetarian my biggest fear was Tofu I had tried it in the past but was never able to finish eating it. At first I thought it might be an acquired taste that I just wasn’t acquiring until I discovered a few preparation techniques. So after a lot of research and experimentation I found this to be the best treatment for tofu to give it a texture more like chicken. The marinade ingredients can be changed around however you’d like as long as you keep the olive oil and vinegar.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup of olive oil
2 tbls white vinegar
1/4 tsp cumin
1/4 tsp allspice
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp dried cilantro
1/4 tsp turmeric
1/4 tsp gara masala
1/2 tsp liquid smoke
1/4 tsp ground thyme

freeze tofu for 24 hours then completely thaw, remove from packaging and place on a plate and cover with a flat surface then place a large can or 2 on top to drain liquids. Allow this to drain for a half hour occasionally draining the liquid off the plate. Once drained cut tofu into half inch cubes then marinate in above mixture for 2-4 hours.

Liquid smoke is just as it sounds, you can buy it at your local grocery store or online at amazon, if you go to my post for Tofu Bacon there is a link there that will let you buy the liquid smoke on amazon. As for the Gara Masala it is an Indian spice that you can buy in the international section at Wegmans in the Indian section.
